What to bring?
* Food and soft drinks are provided by the NEA, (alcohol is not allowed).
* If you want to share your favorite dish your are welcome to do so.
* Also, please let me know if you have any nutritional requirements we may need to consider.
* You can bring a friend, significant other, children, etc. just include the number of people when RSVP.
* Please bring chairs and some music.
* Does anyone have a radio and coolers we can use?

A Ph.D. Is Not Enough! Workshop, September 19, 2006
A Ph.D. Is Not Enough! workshop will be held on Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at UMass Amherst.

The event has been organized by the Graduate Education and Career Development Initiative (GECDI) at UMass Amherst. GECDI is a graduate-student directed organization designed to address the career development and educational needs of graduate students.

This year A Ph.D. Is Not Enough! will be a day-long event to be held at the Campus Center.  There will be two morning sessions, "Succeeding in Graduate School" and "The Tenure Process," that will each feature a keynote speaker and a panel discussion.

After lunch, Dr. Jorge Cham, the writer of Ph.D. Comics, Dr. Jorge Cham, will offer a humorous look at life in graduate school through his presentation "The Power of Procrastination."

There will be six afternoon workshops including:  "What UMASS Career Services Has to Offer," "Interviewing and Applying for Tenure Track Positions," "Consulting Jobs," "Effective Teaching," "Grant Writing," and "Networking."

This event is open to all NEAGEP graduate students, but free registration is required.

Fall Recruiting Weekend, October 6-8, 2006
The Northeast Alliance and the University of Massachusetts Amherst hold a Fall Recruiting Weekend. Students join us for a first-hand look at the graduate program opportunities in the areas of  Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Physics and Polymer Science and Engineering.  They are able to tour laboratories and meet with faculty, students and staff who talk about their research and graduate programs. NEA Science Day, October 13-14, 2006
The Northeast Alliance holds the NEA-Day every year, in which minority students plus their mentors from the Alliance institutions gather to exchange ideas and best practices on student recruitment and retention, graduate student hurdles, mentoring practices, and life after the doctorate. Students present posters of their research work and have ample time to mingle with faculty, guests, and other students during the course of the day.

Undergraduate Conference for Students in Science, Engineering and Mathematics, Campus Center, University of Massachusetts Amherst

The Northeast Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (NEAGEP) and the Office of ALANA Affairs are co-hosting a fair on November 30th for underrepresented minority undergraduates in STEM disciplines at UMass Amherst and the Five Colleges . This is the kick-off event for the NEAGEP "Recruiting Our Own" initiative. Until now, we have focused our recruitment efforts on minority-serving institutions, largely neglecting the students at our own institutions. The goal of the event is to tell students about internships, summer research opportunities and graduate programs available to them within the larger NEAGEP. In addition, they will learn about resources available to them here at UMass Amherst. There will be panel discussions to inform students about what they can do with doctoral degrees and how much fun summer research programs can be! This event will be particularly important for ensuring that our UMass Amherst and Five College minority students learn about the joy of research and have an opportunity to get that experience. We truly hope you will participate. The following is a tentative agenda.

The Sixth Annual Alliance Day, September 28, 2007
We are pleased to announce that the NCLSAMP Annual Research Conference will be held in conjunction with the North Carolina Alliance to Create Opportunity through Education (NC OPT-ED) program on Friday, September 28, 2007 in Greensboro, North Carolina.  This conference will involve students from the CREST, NC-MSEN, LSAMP, HBCU-UP and AGEP programs in one location. Workshops and seminars have been designed to address each group, and research projects will be presented by undergraduate and graduate students.
